It’s 2010 and the UK market for plus-size clothing has never been bigger, with 45% growth in the plus-size womenswear market over the past five years. With big brand designers this week highlighting demand by announcing plans to launch plus-size clothing, new research from Mintel reveals that almost a quarter of women in the UK, equivalent to 6.2 million people, are plus-size and wear clothes in sizes 18 and over.

In the last five years, Mintel estimates that the plus-size market for womenswear (sizes 18+) has increased by 45% to £3.8 billion in 2010, compared to growth in the overall womenswear market of just 15%. Larger-size menswear has also grown steadily by 6% to £1.9 billion between 2005 and 2010.

Tamara Sender, Senior Fashion Analyst at Mintel, said:

“Rising levels of obesity in the UK mean that plus-size consumers are increasing and these shoppers are looking for improved choice in plus-size clothing and more fashionable garments. Given the numbers of not just plus-size women, but also men, with a third wearing XL clothes or bigger, these consumers can no longer be considered a minority or niche sector and retailers of all types of clothing need to wake up to the growth potential of this market.”

Today, the most purchased clothing size in the UK is a size 12, with 31% of women buying this size in the UK, followed by size 14. However, with 10.1 million women in the UK (equivalent to nearly 40% of the female population) wearing clothes sized 16 and over, there is growing demand for clothing more representative of the overall population.

But it seems retailers are not matching demand as over half of women who are size 18 find that not enough shops offer a range of choices to cater for different sizes. Furthermore, more than four in ten women size 18 and over believe that plus-size clothes tend to be less fashionable than smaller sizes.

“Many high street retailers have still not extended their range of clothes to provide wider choices for the growing number of shoppers that do not fit into the standard size mould. With rates of obesity increasing, the new generation of younger, fashion conscious plus-size consumers are looking for the same trend-led clothes that exist for slimmer women.” Tamara continues.

Meanwhile, it seems the issue of ‘Vanity Sizing’ is also affecting consumer shopping habits, though perhaps not in the way retailers would prefer. Indeed, more than four in ten (44%) clothes buyers are unhappy about the differences in clothes sizes that exist from store to store and uncertainty over sizing is one reason why four in ten shoppers stick to a small number of stores where they know the sizes will fit and the styles will suit their shape. Midmarket retailers are the biggest culprits, with nearly half (48%) of consumers who buy most of their clothes from these types of stores saying sizes lack consistency, compared with 42% of discount shoppers and 38% of upmarket highstreet shoppers.

“While Vanity Sizing may have been introduced in order to appeal to consumers and encourage buying, it seems shoppers are very aware about what is happening – and it is having the reverse effect. Retailers need to regain the confidence of consumers over sizing, and helping customers group retailers and sizing policies together could be the way to win back both shoppers hearts and wallets.” Tamara concludes.

The demand for plus size fashion is higher then ever and seems to be finally gaining customer satisfaction.

The media coverage regarding plus size fashion last week, made huge waves within the industry. Journalists from the Daily Mail reported that a quarter of women are now a size 18 and larger- a statistic which has risen by 45% in the past five years. Now, more then 6 million British women wear plus size clothing. www.lovedrobe.co.uk

Providing fashions for plus size is proving to be the fastest growing market for retail chains. Stores have started to introduce size ranges of 20+, while others have been trying out larger mannequins, including Debenhams, who are currently running a trial version.

M&S have moved away from having a separate plus range, by offering larger sizes in the fashions available to all other shoppers. They also introduced a plus sized range of school uniforms just last month.

It now seems that the commercial viability of increasing the plus size market has been recognized at last. What every woman wants, irrespective of size, is high fashion; and now it feels like the beginning of a revolution in plus size, expanding to give women a greater choice then ever before.

Here at Lovedrobe HQ, the plus size clothing online brand, we say that the industry needs to start as it means to go on, to help all those beautiful women out there to make peace with their bodies in style!

More than six million British women are now officially overweight, causing a boom in the plus-size clothing market.

In the last five years, there has been a 45% increase in plus-size clothing – compared to only 15% in the overall womenswear market – as now a quarter of British women are a size 18 or more.

‘Given the numbers of plus-size women – with a third wearing XL clothes or bigger – these consumers can no longer be considered a minority,’ said senior fashion analyst at Mintel, Tamara Sender.

Providing clothing for these women has become a billion pound market, bringing in £3.8 billion a year, and it is rapidly rising.

However, larger women have told researchers for Mintel that more still needs to be done to provide clothes that are fashionable and look good on a bigger frame.

‘Rising levels of obesity in the UK mean that plus-size consumers are increasing and these shoppers are looking for improved choice and more fashionable garments,’ said Sender.

Fashion designers have now started to cotton on to the high demand in stylish plus-size clothing.

This week, designer Marc Jacobs has revealed plans to launch his own plus-size clothing range, producing a line in size 14 and up.

He is not the first designer to break from convention and realise the potential in the plus-size market.

In February this year, designer Mark Fast made waves at London Fashion Week when he premiered size 12 and 14 models on his runway.

Some stores are also revolutionizing their shops in response to the plus-size boom. Marks and Spencer has moved towards offering larger sizes in its fashions currently available to slimmer shoppers, while Debenhams is even sampling size 16 mannequins.

Call them real-sized or plus-sized, women of all shapes are establishing a weightier presence in the fashion world, garnering greater attention from fashion designers, retailers, and advertisers.

Many women accept themselves, whatever their appearance, and wish to see to see this sentiment reflected in the use of models of all sizes and ages both on the runways and in advertising.

A growing number of international designers, including Prada, Marc Jacobs, Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Dolce & Gabbana have recently sent plus-sized models down the runways.

It’s a borderless trend, as Canadian designer Mark Fast included at least one plus-sized model at his show at London Fashion Week, and both Yves Saint Laurent and Canadian brand Joe Fresh Style have featured plus-sized model Crystal Renn on their runways.

“At Joe, we thought it would be great to show a diverse cast on the runway – including women with womanly bodies. So for the Joe Fresh Fall 2010 RTW show – we used Crystal Renn, a real-sized or plus-sized model and Kirsten Owen, an uber model who is still rocking the runways and magazines in her forties,” says Adrienne Shoom, head stylist for Joe Fresh Style.

Canadian designer Jessica Biffi also ventures into plus-sized designs, with her capsule collections for retailer Addition Elle.

“For the longest time, plus-sized women have felt that their voices have not been heard by the fashion industry. It’s great that designers are finally getting on board and realizing that this is not just a niche market. I’m plus-sized myself and although I also design a regular line with smaller sizes, I’m glad to be part of this trend toward designing for all shapes and sizes,” says Biffi.

“Following the negative press around models that are too thin, it appears that designers and retailers have finally realized that they can no longer avoid demographic facts about the women they serve; specifically, that the majority of women today are a size twelve or more,” says Kerry Mitchell, president of Addition Elle.

Mainstream retailers such as Sears and Zellers also see futures with heavier shares of plus-sized clothing.

“Sears offers over ten brands for plus-size women in response to demand from the buying public. We’re expanding the casting demographic in printed media to better reflect our Canadian consumers and are very excited to launch our first plus-size catalog, to be released in September, which focuses on the latest trends, styling tips and the best of fall fashion,” says Cynthia Florek, a brand and trend director at Sears Canada.

In store this fall at Zellers, Canadians will find an expanded plus-sized Pure collection by Canadian designer Alfred Sung, along with other plus-sized apparel.

“Fashion and style are not limited to size or income. Our plus customer is appreciative of the fact that they are being given the same trend-forward options that other customers have,” says Carrie Kirkman, a merchandise manager for Zellers ladies’ apparel.

This inclusivity for all women also extends to the beauty world, in advertising for established brands such as Dove.

“We’ve been using real women in our (advertising) campaigns since 2004 and receive overwhelmingly positive feedback from women demonstrating their support of our commitment to showing realistic and attainable images of real women, to represent beauty of all ages, ethnicities, shapes and sizes,” says Sharon MacLeod, a Dove Director.

Marc Jacobs is set to become the first major fashion house to make clothing for women larger than size 14.
The label’s president Robert Duffy wrote about the move on Twitter, confirming that the company was in discussions to produce a line but added that it would be a year before the range was available.
“We are in talks now for plus sizes. Listen, we are in the very beginning stages of talking to a partner about plus sizes.” He also revealed that he has problems himself buying clothes. “I’m a big guy 6ft 4in, 210 lbs. (It’s) not easy for me to find clothes” he wrote. “Of course I can have them made. I know how everyone feels. I try to diet but…I don’t like the phrase plus-sizes. Any suggestions?”
“We gotta do larger sizes” he added. “I’m with you. As soon as I get back to NY. I’m on it! It will take me about a year. But stay with us.”
The New York Times recently ran a report on the plus-size clothing industry which revealed the difficulty designers have creating larger sizes. Apparently, women who wear sizes greater than 16 gain different amounts of weight on different areas of their bodies, some become top heavy and others fill out around the stomach – making it hard to create patterns that will work for many women.
Most designers do not produce anything larger than a size 14.

Article Content:

Marc Jacobs, one of the world’s most successful design labels, is set to become the first major fashion houses to produce a clothing line catering for women bigger than size 14.

Although there is yet to be an official announcement, Robert Duffy, president of the Marc Jacobs label, wrote about the move on Twitter, confirming that the company was in the early stages of discussions to produce a plus-size range. He said that it would be a year before the line was available.

“We are in talks now. For plus sizes,” Duffy tweeted. “Listen, we are in the very beginning stages of talking to a partner about plus sizes.” He also revealed the problems he has buying clothes. “I’m a big guy 6ft 4in, 210 lbs. [It's] not easy for me to find clothes,” he wrote. “Of course I can have them made. I know how everyone feels. I try to diet but… I don’t like the phrase plus-sizes. Any suggestions?

“We gotta do larger sizes,” he added. “I’m with you. As soon as I get back to NY. I’m on it! It will take me about a year. But stay with us.”

The fashion industry has shown a new interest in fuller-figured women over the past year. Singer Beth Ditto, who is a size 18, has become a fashion icon. She appeared on the cover of Love magazine in 2009 and began designing a collection for high street store Evans, which caters for sizes 14-32, last year. She has also become a staple on front rows at fashion shows such as Chanel and Fendi. Model Crystal Renn, who is a size 14 rather than the typical size 8, has become the first plus-size supermodel, appearing on the catwalk for labels such as Chanel and Jean Paul Gaultier and gracing the cover of Italian Vogue. But while these images have been welcomed by the public, there has been little core change in the fashion collections. If a Marc Jacobs plus-size range were to be successful, other designers could follow suit.

Currently, labels such as Victoria Beckham, Erdem and Chloé do not produce anything larger than a size 14. Many designers have said it is harder to create clothes for larger women.

Last week the New York Times magazine ran a report on the plus-size clothing industry. It told how a key difficulty encountered by designers was the way that dimensions change in women who wear sizes greater than 16 because they gain different amounts of weight on different areas of their body – some become top heavy, some fill out around the stomach – making it harder to create patterns that will work for many women.

Attitudes within the fashion industry towards larger sizes have also appeared to be negative. When he was told last year that German magazine Brigitte intended to use “ordinary” women in their fashion shoots, designer Karl Lagerfeld branded the move absurd and said that it was driven by “fat mummies sitting with their bags of crisps in front of the television, saying that thin models are ugly”. In June this year, British designer Julien Macdonald, who is a judge on the TV show Britain’s Next Top Model, said that it would be “a joke” if a plus-size model won the contest.

Typically, designers say there is little demand for larger sizes. But Rachel Sproule, creative director for Evans, said: “We are due to release the second Beth Ditto at Evans collection in September and we had an amazing response when we launched last year. There really is an appetite for high-fashion-led product within this marketplace.”

Marc Jacobs may be set to find out how great that demand is, and if he can create designs that appeal to this market. The 46-year-old designer started the Marc Jacobs label in 1986 but concurrently worked at other fashion labels such as Perry Ellis and, from 1997, Louis Vuitton.

While his work for Louis Vuitton has involved high-profile collaborations with artists such as Takashi Murakami and rapper Kanye West, he has always taken risks with his eponymous brand, creating a number of unusual lines under his name. He has recently launched Little Marc Jacobs childrenswear, Bark Jacobs dog accessories and a fragrance for men called Bang. During New York Fashion Week next month, he will launch Book Marc, a bookshop.

“I do think that the Marc Jacobs brand and [diffusion line] Marc by Marc has the ingenuity to do many things and still keep the perceived aura of cool,” said Harriet Quick, fashion features director of Vogue. “A plus-size line would seem to be a good add-on idea that responds to market needs. It would be great to have a line that is not simply dull and tent-shaped and to have the sweetness and detail of the brand carried through to the collection.”

GQ commissioning editor Jonathan Heaf, who has worked as a consultant for the Louis Vuitton brand, said: “If anyone can turn their hand to plus size clothes – out to create something elegant rather than simply make a splash for their own name – it’s Marc. About time, I say. He just makes pretty, modern, sexy clothes for pretty, modern, sexy girls; girls confident enough not to have to shout to be noticed.”

Sproule also thinks designers would get a great response if they were to experiment with larger sizes.

“What every woman wants, irrespective of size, is fashion; and it feels like the beginning of a revolution in plus size to give more choice than ever before,” she said.

For women who are edgy or just on the younger side Torrid is giving other women’s plus size clothing retailers like Lane Bryant (and their intimate apparel line Cacique) a run for their money. While these two retailers battle it out, in an unofficial showdown we get the best of both worlds by getting to have stylish finds from these fashion-forward stores.

LEOPARD SKIRTED THONG
Lingerie-Alicious, did you know some of your favorite retailers for women’s plus size clothing also carry lingerie in your size, plus shoes and accessories? Torrid really has got it all. I don’t know if I’m the only one who noticed this, but while stringy thongs may have their appeal on the backside the front is usually this totally awkward triangle. These sheer skirted thongs skirt that problem and I feel make the front just as sexy as the back. A new issue you might encounter is wearing this with jeans might be a little problematic with the extra fabric. However, this can always be your go to item after you utter the words “let me slip into something a little more comfortable” or can be part of ur big reveal under a not too clingy dress or trench coat!

Currently Torrid has them in two prints:
DOT SKIRTED THONG
As seen above a fierce leopard and a Classic Black and White Polka Dots pattern pictured (right). Skirted thong, .

Also, another popular panty style is the “cut out” available in several designs at Torrid

SATIN BOW CHEEKY
You’ll be all wrapped up in his arms with this satiny delight. With a peek-a-boo cut out on the backside the little black accents are sure to highlight your bum. Super sexy with a hint of sweet, panties .

LACE-TRIMMED THONG
Lady in red, silk seduction—something about the color of passion that can really get ones blood flowing. A bold color will rush the endorphins and adrenaline so you feel like the sexiest woman on the planet, and your man will feel the same way. This is a thicker banded thong so no weird triangle here, plus little lace details add extra appeal cover the cut out in the front but still offering coverage and comfort. Thong, .

For ladies who can rock anything, (some don’t like all lace, or more cottony choices) there are many more looks and styles some all lace and sheer bottom items~ check it out.

Torrid has been getting a lot of love from us this week and earns out women’s plus size clothing award. There are definitely some killer outfits you can create buying all of your items from this one store. If we haven’t convinced you already these black dress for plus sizes might get you to change your position. Also, Torrid is following in line with other sites like ShopBop and others because you can create your own look book online, not to mention the awesome photoshoots they do for their ad campaigns & lookbooks.

RUFFLE-COLLAR DRESS
Calling all Divas. Does your inner bad girl want to come out to play? A sultry piece like this is on the demure side, but still full of intrgue. You may be the girl next door, who wants to show she’s got a frisky side too. To amp up your style and turn from the girl next door, to the secret agent hottie then this dresses black ruffle collar and under the radar military-esque stylings are the hollywoodized version of the spy next door. Style inspirations here are somewhere in between Rhianna/Beyonce (or Sasha Fierce—btw, is she going to do a P.Diddy/Puffy Combs/Sean Jean/alternate alias thing because it didn’t seem like Ms. (Mrs.?) fierce lasted very long) and Angelina Jolie circa her badass roles (Tomb Raider, Wanted, Mr. & Mrs. Smith and less popular flicks like Sky Captian and the World of Tomorrow, or Mojave Moon). I know all you curvy ladies can bring it in this dress, so give something for the stickly girls to be green eyed about. Dress, .

LACE HALTER DRESS
Designer Z. Cavaricci is just one among many bringing their famous branding and name to mass market retail stores. Z. & Torrid are a match made in leather and lace. Anything on the rougher glamazon side of things is where these two brands find home. This (mostly) black dress for plus size is a contemporary spin on the traditional black dress. A lacy wonder: with current stylistic details like the frontal exposed zipper and the modern take on anything vintage, in this case the sweetheart neckline halter. All of this is meshed together with the reveal of an indigo blue satin through black lace and an overall curve hugging pencil silhouette. Perfect for the night you plan on being a smoking hot vixen. Dress,

Not quite flower power, these women’s plus size clothing pieces are fabulous casual dresses from Torrid. Torrid being the sister store of Hot Topic one would expect edgy, gothic, punky pieces. Though they do have more than their fair selection of those (as seen earlier this week, in case you missed it–black dresses). They’ve got some frilly girly pieces too.

FLORAL PRINT DRESS
In an array of soft hippiesque colors this floral tube dress is two parts vintage-retro, three parts sugar, spice, and everything nice. An unusual color blends is pulled off masterfully in this dress showcasing a lilac, orange, yellow, pink and red. The sweetheart bustline makes this feminine frock even cuter. For ladies who are ready to shine in the summertime. An open vest will take this look to the next level, adding an unexpected punch, like this one from Torrid in black. Dress, .

HAWAIIAN PRINT DRESS
The other piece was soft and airy, this still a floral takes us to the dark side. Like a garden shining in the moonlight this dark dress has fluorescent pops. Stun and wow because this Hawaiian print is sure to grab some attention. A simple leaf pattern is given some vibrance with neon coloring contrasting against the black background. This dress has a bubble shape which is one of my favorites because one feels more secure in a dress that doesn’t fly around at a whim’s notice while a breeze blows past. Similarly this dress has lines that accentuate shape and gives a subtle hourglass figure. Consider wearing some vintage tights with the backseam down the middle and some simple black pumps to really do this outfit justice. Dress, .
